Czech company HydroCon rebuilt a small hydropower plant (SHPP) in Hluboká nad Vltavou, completely modernized in 2014 with a strong emphasis on the latest automation technology. The turbine supplier was international engineering company Mavel a.s. mySCADA was implemented as the main SCADA control system, achieving full automation of the facility.

The small hydropower plant required complete modernization to meet current standards for remote management and effective data control. As Karel Kraus, Chairman of the Board of Directors of HydroCon, explained: "In this area there is still great potential for application of technology nowadays quite common in other automation industries, enabling remote supervision and management of these power plants, as well as real-time monitoring of the status, performance optimization and fault diagnosis." The SHPP is equipped with a direct-flow horizontal Kaplan turbine with belt-drive power transmission to an asynchronous generator designed for parallel network operation — a technically demanding configuration requiring robust SCADA support.

mySCADA was implemented as the main SCADA control system of the small hydropower plant. By combining smart sensors and advanced algorithms, the system achieves a high level of reliability and efficiency in energy production. The platform provides full automation of the Kaplan turbine and generator operation, remote supervision and management, real-time monitoring of operational status, performance optimization algorithms, and fault diagnosis capabilities. All requirements that were previously only achievable in larger industrial facilities were met in this compact small hydropower installation.

  • Full automation of the small hydropower plant achieved — continuous energy production with minimal manual intervention
  • Remote supervision and management enabled — matching capabilities of much larger industrial facilities
  • Real-time operational status monitoring of turbine, generator, and all supporting systems
  • Performance optimization and fault diagnosis deployed using smart sensors and advanced algorithms
  • 24/7 reliable energy production with high reliability and efficiency standards
  • Benchmark deployment demonstrating the potential for SCADA modernization across small hydropower facilities
